Opening the plenary session of the 67th GA today (25 September) at the UN in New York Ban Ki-moon, recalling how people around the globe wanted jobs and the prospects of a decent life, welcomed new leaders, and reminded them they had been "installed by new voices, and expected to make decisive breaks with the past." Turning to the situation in Syria, where more than 18000 people, mostly civilians, have died since the uprising against President Bashar al-Assad began 18 months ago and some 2.5 million Syrians urgently need humanitarian aid according to UN estimates, Ban called on the international community, "especially the members of the Security Council and countries in the region", to support the efforts of Joint Special Representative Lakhdar Brahimi. He also stressed the need to "stop the violence and flows of arms to both sides, and set in motion a Syrian-led transition as soon as possible."
