Outside the Lines: African Americans and the Integration of the National Football League

Outside the Lines traces how sports laid a foundation for social change long before the judicial system formally recognized the inequalities of racial separation. Integrating sports teams to include white and black athletes alike, the National Football League served as a microcosmic fishbowl of the highs and lows, the trials and triumphs, of racial integration.

Watching a football game on a Sunday evening, most sports fans do not realize the profound impact the National Football League had on the civil rights movement. Similarly, in a sport where seven out of ten players are black, few are fully aware of the history and contributions of their athletic forebears. Among the touchdowns and tackles lies a rich history of African American life and the struggle to achieve equal rights.

Although the Supreme Court did not reverse their 1896 decision of "separate but equal" in the Plessy v Ferguson case until more than fifty years later, sports laid a foundation for social change long before our judicial system formally recognized the inequalities of racial separation. Integrating sports teams to include white and black athletes alike, the National Football League served as a microcosmic fishbowl of the highs and lows, the trials and triumphs, of racial integration.

In this chronicle of black NFL athletes, Charles K. Ross has given us the story of the Jackie Robinsons of American football.

Part#2 Capgome Kirab Budaya 2012, Bandung Indonesia Tube. Duration : 36.98 Mins.

In Indonesia during the New Order era ( Orde Baru ), everything that had Chinese or China overtones such as the Chinese New Year Festival was banned for a long time because they were thought not to reflect a sense of nationalism. Currently in the Reformation era, the ethnic Chinese have been recognized as a part of Indonesian people. In 2000 President Abdurrahman Wahid (Gus Dur) revoked the Presidential Instruction No. 14/1967, since it is no longer appropriate according to the principles of Unity in Diversity/Bhineka Tunggal Ika (different in cultures, peoples, tribes and religions, but still united in one Nation), and Plularism (Respecting the differences or plurality of tribes, religions, races and cultures). President Abdurrahman Wahid subsequently issued the Presidential Decree No. 19/2001 on April 9, 2001, which acknowledged the Chinese New Year's Day as an optional holiday (only to be observed by the ethnic Chinese who celebrate it). During the administration of President Megawati Sukarnoputri, Chinese New Year's Day was established as the official national holiday beginning in 2003. Now in the reign of President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono (SBY), the celebration of Cap Go Meh (15 days after the Chinese New Year's Day) is held throughout the country. The city of Bandung in particular held the Cap Go Meh festival for the second time in 2012. The celebration is allowed to take place in the streets according to the tradition of Confucian beliefs. According to the news ...

postheadericon EDL - English Defence League 1

EDL - English Defence League 1 Video Clips. Duration : 8.92 Mins.

Part 1 of a radio documentary about the EDL, BNP, KKK, so-called British Peoples Party (sic) and other right-wing extremists. These groups are currently pursuing a 3-pronged strategy in the UK. The 1st element in their strategy is the electoral politics of the BNP, facilitated by BNP attempts to improve their image by pretending that the BNP is no longer racist or Nazi. In the Euro 2009 election 2 BNP candidates were elected, but 94% of British voters still actively opposed the BNP, and recent BNP by-election results have been disastrous. The 2nd element in the strategy consists of EDL and SIOE hooligans provoking street fights which the BNP then misrepresent as ethnic violence. EDL and SIOE protests are staged on the pretext of opposing terrorism, by people who did nothing to "defend" Britain after 7/7, who never protest against Nazi terrorists, who have close links with the BNP, and whose supporters show appreciation to a regime that butchered Britons during WW2 by giving Hitler salutes. The 3rd element in the strategy is the outright terrorism pursued by Mosque arsonists, racist street attackers, and by failed Nazi nail-bombers like BNP candidate Robert Cottage, BNP supporter Nathan Worrell, BNP officials Lambertus Nieuwhof and Tony Lecomber, BNP steward and murderer David Copeland, and by other Nazi nail-bombers like British Peoples Party members Neil Lewington and convicted BPP paedophile Martyn Gilleard. Since EDL supporters were photographed giving Nazi salutes ...

Eugene Kinckle Jones: The National Urban League and Black Social Work, 1910-1940

A leading African American intellectual of the early twentieth century, Eugene Kinckle Jones (1885-1954) was instrumental in professionalizing black social work in America. In his role as executive secretary of the National Urban League, Jones worked closely with social reformers who advocated on behalf of African Americans and against racial discrimination in the United States. Coinciding with the Great Migration of African Americans to northern urban centres, Jones's activities on behalf of the Urban League included campaigning for equal hiring practices, advocating for the inclusion of black workers in labour unions, and promoting the importance of vocational training and social work for members of the black community. Drawing on rich interviews with Jones's colleagues and associates, as well as recently opened family and Urban League papers, Felix L. Armfield freshly examines the growth of African American communities and the new roles played by social workers. In calling attention to the need for black social workers in the midst of the Great Migration, Jones and his colleagues sought to address problems stemming from race and class conflicts from within the community. This book blends the biography of a significant black leader with an in-depth discussion of the roles of black institutions and organizations to study the evolution of African American life immediately before the civil rights era. ...Read more
