MIAGI -- JM South Africa (www.miagi.co.za) addresses the issue of ethnic relations through its all-inclusive programming. By offering an international platform for intercultural creative dialogue, MIAGI has brought people together that would otherwise never meet. One such MIAGI encounter took place in May 2008 at Cape Town City Hall when Thikundwi kha Sialala -- Venda Ngoma Drummers and Dancers met the musicians and the audience of the Cape Philharmonic Orchestra (www.cpo.org.za). Please note that this video displays a cut version of the work, with rough 'home video' transitions -- we apologise, but think that the material is of such interest that we wish to present it anyway and trust that the impression rendered does the full composition right. About Ciacona & Tshikona -- Dance from North and South: Intercultural Composition for Venda Ngoma Drummers and Dancers, Kudu-Horns and Classical Orchestra by South African composer Hans Huyssen (www.huyssen.de). Commissioned by MIAGI in 2007 This composition relies on a Western orchestra to meet the demands of the concert situation, in which the music itself makes the running and the audience is involved only passively, but its essential structure is derived from an African from of musical expression embedded in the social occasion, when people gather to participate actively.
