MHRMI Response To National Post Letter "Canadian Greeks: Don't Rewrite Balkan History" -- OpEd Written by: Eurasia Review January 17, 2012 By Bill Nicholov Why the National Post chose to be "objective" and let the Greek community have equal time in responding to the recent op-ed about Macedonia is beyond me. One should not give the oppressor the opportunity to justify its brutal actions against the oppressed. The vast majority of readers, understandably, have no interest in hearing the long, drawn out version of Greece's romanticized history. Greece is the only country in the Western world to claim that it has no ethnic minorities and proudly proclaims its "ethnic purity". Dangerous statements coming from the self-proclaimed "birthplace of democracy". In their Letters to the Editor, the Consul General of Greece and various Greek organizations referred to the Republic of Macedonia as "FYROM". ("In sharp contrast to Greece's constructive efforts, FYROM Prime Minister Nikola Gruevski..." and "This is what Canadians should consider when they hear the complaints of the FYROM partisans..."). No Macedonian introduces him or herself as being from "FYROM". These statements show readers what the official Greek position is: deny the very existence of a country and an ethnic group. They've taken their directive from the top. Former Greek Prime Minister Constantine Mitsotakis admitted in 1995 that Greece initiated the nonsensical "name dispute" to continue to deny the existence of its ...

After the treachery of the peasant Dime Paftar, who informed the occupiers for the presence of partisans in the village, named Lavci, among whom is the legendary partisan Todor Angelov - The Teacher, for whom a warrant has been issued, the Bulgarian chief of the police staff and the major of the Bulgarian soldiers in Bitola organize a joint action to attack the village. Covered by darkness, the partisans, together with the peasants prepare to leave the village.

Macedonian wood carving from Berovo Video Clips. Duration : 2.12 Mins.

20.04.09 Wood carving in Macedonia in the 13th century continued its development with new vigour and was enriched by new elements. The members of the Mijak wood-carver's school introduced the human figure in their artistic works and integrated it within the ornamental whole in an amazing way. In 1814, Petre Filipovski's "tajfas" from the village of Gari made the Great Iconostasis, kept in the National Library in Belgrade until World War II when it was destroyed by bombing. Petre Filipovski "Garka," his brother Marko, and Makarie Frckovski from Galicnik worked on the iconostasis in the Church of the Holy Saviour in Skopje from 1824 to 1829 — an iconostasis ten metres long and six metres high. Some of the characters in the Biblical scenes are depicted dressed in Galicnik folk costumes. Art historians are unanimous that the value of this masterpiece lies in the softness of its lines, its arrangement of the forms, its stylisation and its baroque playfulness. In the period from 1830 to 1840, the famous master wood-carvers Petre Filipovski and Makarie Frckovski carved the iconostasis in the Monastery of St. John of Bigor. They left behind self-portraits among the scenes of this iconostasis and again on the iconostasis in the Church of the Holy Savior. The iconostasis in St. John the Baptist is a grandiose example of Macedonian wood carving, divided into six horizontal squares abounding in floral and animal ornaments. www.woodcarvingmacedonia.com

postheadericon Macedonian Patriotic Organization of the Bulgarians -- USA 1

Macedonian Patriotic Organization of the Bulgarians -- USA 1 Tube. Duration : 6.32 Mins.

MPO -- Macedonian Patriotic Organization of the Bulgarian emigrants in the United States Canada Australia USA 01 Bulgarian emigrants moved to North America in the last decades of the 19th century. By the end of World War II their number amounted to about 100000 [1]. The largest Bulgarian colonies were established in the east and northeast states of the United States and Southern Canada -- mainly in New York, Toronto, Chicago, Indianapolis, Akron, Fort Wayne, Lorain, Youngstown, St. Louis, Stilton Gerry, Madison, Granite City, Springfield, Lackawanna, and in South Australia. For a century the Bulgarians managed to stabilize their economic positions and form different political, educational and cultural organizations, which played an important role for the immigration's establishment in the New World. They also had an impact upon the progress in cultural relations between the Bulgarian nation and the American, Canadian and Australian peoples. The following survey has the purpose of clarifying the issues on the formation, major stages and aims in the activities of one of the most interesting and active emigrant organizations -- the Macedonian Patriotic Organization in the United States, Canada and Australia (MPO)**. It incorporated mainly Bulgarians from Macedonia who had moved to the States, Canada and Australia [2]. The Macedonian Patriotic Organization uncompromisingly protected the historical truth of Macedonia's Bulgarian ethnic character. It fought for its freedom by ...

Collective Memory, National Identity, and Ethnic Conflict: Greece, Bulgaria, and the Macedonian Question

Roudometof provides an in-depth analysis of inter-ethnic relations in the southern Balkans. He examines the evolution of the Macedonian Question and the production of rival national narratives by Greeks, Bulgarians, and Macedonians. He introduces the concept of a national narrative in order to account for the production and proliferation of different forms of collective memory among the rival nation-states. Roudometof deconstructs the national narratives of the competing sides and shows the limits of these narratives and their biases. He also develops an alternative interpretation of Macedonian national formation.

The contentious issue of Macedonian national minorities in the southern Balkans is examined as well as the issue of the Albanian movements toward self-determination and succession in Kosovo and western Macedonia. Roudometof argues that the Macedonian minority groups are not as numerous in the neighboring states as it is conventionally assumed. With regard to the Albanian national question, he provides a review of the post-1945 relations between Albania and Greece, the Albanians of Kosovo and the Serbs, and the Albanians and Macedonians. He argues that the Albanian nationalist movements have grown out of the interaction between Albanians and their neighboring nations and ethnic groups. An important resource for scholars, students, and other researchers involved with the Balkans and ethnic conflict resolution in general.
