The history of Nepal is characterized by its isolated position in the Himalayas and its two dominant neighbors, India and China. The national language of Nepal is called 'Nepali', a name given - long after unification of Nepal - to the language called Khas Kura. Nepal experienced a failed struggle for democracy in the 20th century. During the 1990s and until 2008, the country was in civil strife. A peace treaty was signed in 2008 and elections were held in the same year. Many of the ills of Nepal have been blamed on the royal family of Nepal. In a historical vote for the election of the constituent assembly, Nepalis voted to oust the monarchy in Nepal. In June 2008, Nepalis ousted the royal household. Nepal was formally renamed the Federal Democratic Republic of Nepal when it became a federal republic.

Over the past 15 years, the Ogaden area has been ravaged by conflict, that's killed thousands of people. The region borders Djibouti, Kenya, and Somalia and many of its residents are ethnic Somali and Muslim. In 2007, Ethiopian forces waged an offensive against the rebel Ogaden National Liberation Front. But recently, the government held peace talks with the ONLF in Kenya -- another meeting is expected in the coming months. Al Jazeera's Mohammed Adow reports from Ogaden, Ethiopia.

The All Burma Students Democratic Front (ABSDF) celebrated its 20th anniversary on November 1st 2008. It was one of the first students organizations to take up arms in pursuit of political objectives in their struggle against Burmas military regime. Since its formation in 1988 the ABSDF has been fighting for democracy in Burma. It is hard to capture the extent of the sufferings of the students army in the early stages of its formation in 1988 and 1989. Hiding in the jungles with no food, no clothes and no shelter were undoubtedly some of the most meaningful experiences and memories of their lives memories that will be passed down and remembered for generations. Many in the students army suffered from malaria and other diseases and many comrades lost their lives. Apart from fighting the Burmese Army, combating a lack of food, clothes, and medicine was a hard fight in and of itself. But, through spirit and commitment, the ABSDF now has reached 20 years in its fight for democracy in Burma. Ko Than Khe, Chairman of ABSDF, urged the international community to support and help them in their continued struggle for democracy.
