Two great dictators- Joseph Stalin (December 18, 1878 -- March 5, 1953) (Russian: Иосиф Сталин; Georgian: იოსებ სტალინი) was General Secretary of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union's Central Committee from 1922 until his death in 1953. During that time he established the regime now known as Stalinism. As one of several Central Committee Secretariats, Stalin's formal position was originally limited in scope, but he gradually consolidated power and became the de facto party leader and ruler of the Soviet Union[1]. Stalin launched a command economy in the Soviet Union, forced rapid industrialization of the largely rural country and collectivization of its agriculture. MAGLALATIK From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia The Maglalatik is an indigenous dance from the Philippines in which coconut shell halves that are secured onto the dancers' hands and on vests upon which are hung four or six more coconut shell halves. The dancers - all male - perform the dance by hitting one coconut shell with the other - sometimes the ones on the hands, sometimes, the ones on the body, and sometimes the shells worn by another performer, all in time to a fast drumbeat. Like many native Filipino dances, it is intended to impress the viewer with the great skill of the dancer, and in some Filipino Martial Arts (FMA) circles, it has been noted that the manlalatik "consists of a trapping and boxing method hidden in a dance." The name of the dance comes from the Filipino word "Latik", which means "fried coconut milk curd", a coconut product that is used in Filipino cooking, particularly in snacks. Altan Urag is a folk rock and ethnic band that fuses traditional Mongolian sound with a contemporary influence. The name Altan Urag can be loosely translated to Khans Kin or Golden Blood Line, referring to Chinggis Khan and his ancestors. The bands vision is to promote Mongolian culture to the world and introduce traditional music to the young people of the Mongolia. The band has seven members whose skills lie in playing the morin khuur (horse head fiddle), ih khuur (grand horse head fiddle), percussion, bishguur (traditional horn) and yaichin. The vocalists are throat singers and long song singers and all were trained in traditional and classical Mongolian music. The band has released two albums, Foals Been Born an ethnic contemporary album (2004), and Made in Altan Urag, a folk-rock album (Sonor Records 2006). While Director of the National Orchestra of Radio Kabul Afghanistan during the mid-20th century, he composed over a hundred melodies known as naghma and brought acclaim to the short-necked plucked lute, the rabab. Over the airwaves, Ustad Mohammad Omar presented a diverse collection of songs from Afghanistan's rich musical heritage. His radio orchestra, with its regional folk instruments, introduced the nation to a variety of folk traditions rooted in the country's many ethnic and linguistic groups. Driving along the Afghan border in Tajikistan with Peregrine Adventures, we came across a Wakhan Valley village staging a music, singing and dancing show. The dancers were from the capital Dushanbe and were there to celebrate and warm up the village for the imminent arrival of the Tajikistan President. He arrived the next day. There was an official cameraman there -perhaps the footage would be spliced in with the presidential visit for Tajik state TV. The whole village was present, all the women and children looking from one side and from atop a wall along the roadway before the 'stage', the men to the other side. Locals got up and danced alongside the performers occasionally too. I doubt this kind of dancing is still allowed across the river in Afghanistan, where a large population of ethnic Tajiks live.

Before the Croatian War of Independence the Baroque town was a prosperous, mixed community of Croats, Serbs and other ethnic groups. As Yugoslavia began to break up, Serbia's President Slobodan Milošević and Croatia's President Franjo Tuđman started to pursue nationalist politics. In 1990, an armed insurrection was started by Croatian Serb militias, supported by the Serbian government and paramilitary groups, who seized control of Serb-populated areas of Croatia. His name was Jeremiah and he became known as a prophet of gloom. Were he to return to life today, doubtless he would be an economist. He was the first person to analyse the situation many find themselves in today of being a minority in a culture whose beliefs are not their own. Jeremiah wrote a letter to the Jewish exiles in Babylon in which he said: "Seek the welfare of the city to which you have gone and pray to God on its behalf, for in its peace and prosperity you will find peace and prosperity". The National Cohesion and Integration Commission now says it will ban the use of some words that may cause tension during the campaign period. The commission argues that the words have continually been used to stereotype some communities in the country yet they are offensive within the community of reference. Vice chair of the commission Milly Lwanga says that Kenyans are now aware of hate speech and are now shifting to using stereoptypes and coded language which could raise possibility of reoccurrence of ethnic conflicts.

So parents seem to be caught in a 'lose - lose' situation of having to push their children to academic excellence, and then having to face huge emotional problems when their children see them as the 'bad guys' who apply pressure and undue stress. Dr Tan will share some of the struggles and successes of navigating his family through the educational ladder; asking the whys, whats and hows of trying to educate children better, and to think deeper about the importance of character formation versus the successful completion of worksheets. About the Speaker Dr Tan Lai Yong worked as a doctor in Singapore before going to Yunnan, China, to work with orphans, disabled and leprosy-affected children. In his 15 years in Yunnan, he created innovative approaches to teaching healthcare to minority ethnic groups, planned surgery for cleft palate babies, and helped with the rural poor. During China's National Day celebrations in 2004, at an event graced by Premier Wen Jia Bao, Dr Tan received the Friendship Award. The myth is a complex and contradictory stereotype of AAs as academic over-achievers. While many believe the stereotype is positive, it causes many problems. Asian Americans are overlooked for affirmative action and academic assistance. Tracked by parents, counselors, and social expectations to excel in math-intensive fields, despite their preferences, they struggle to balance personal goals and mental health. The myth diverts attention from systematic structural racism by emphasizing individualism, and pitting AAs against other groups. Viewed as too competitive and taking over colleges, AAs face racial resentment, discrimination, and hate crimes. Model Minority overcomes misconceptions of AA students. Model Minority timely coincides with national priorities and debates on how to increase educational performance and economic participation. It engages school reform, equal opportunity, multiculturalism, race, parenting, and democracy. We will compare the experiences and perspectives of AA college students, faculty, and staff of various ethnic backgrounds in Boston, Chicago, Berkeley and Oakland.
