postheadericon India Defends Moves Against Social Media

India Defends Moves Against Social Media Tube. Duration : 4.00 Mins.

This is the VOA Special English Technology Report, from voaspecialenglish.com | http The government in India is defending itself against charges of Internet censorship. The move comes after the government last week asked companies like Facebook and Twitter to block more than three hundred websites. Officials accused the websites of posting edited images and videos of earthquake victims. They said the websites falsely claimed that the images were Muslim victims caught in recent ethnic conflict in India's northeastern Assam state and Burma. A number of the images were reportedly uploaded from Pakistan. Officials said the panic that resulted caused thousands of Hindu immigrants to flee the area. They feared that Muslims would answer the false reports with attacks of their own. Lawyer Pawan Duggal says this is the first time Internet and mobile-phone technology have been used to create fear in a community. He says India has to make cyber security the top concern for the nation. "Unfortunately, India does not even have a national cyber-security policy," he says. And there is no plan, should this kind of emergency happen again. Pawan Duggal also thinks India needs an army of its own cyber warriors. On Friday, India's Communication and Information Technology Minister dismissed claims that the government is trying to censor social media. But he did say misuse of social media has to be stopped. Pranesh Prakash is with the Center for Internet and Society based in Bangalore. He says ...

Class: Ethnicity, and Social Inequality (Mcgill-Queen's Studies in Ethnic History)

In Class, Ethnicity, and Social Inequality Christopher McAll discusses the increased juxtaposition of ethnically distinct groups in the same social environments which has resulted from labour migration since the Second World War. He shows that, in the context of competitive labour markets where the boundaries between ethnic groups can be viewed in terms of ethnicity, social relations can easily degenerate into ethnic conflict. ...Read more

postheadericon The Ethnic Cleansing of Palestine. By Ilan Pappe

The Ethnic Cleansing of Palestine. By Ilan Pappe Video Clips. Duration : 59.98 Mins.

This is a unique opportunity to hear the renowned historian and author, Ilan Pappe speak about his book "The Ethnic Cleansing of Palestine" where he lays out the past, present, and offers suggestions for the future. Vancouver Marsh 29, 08. ***** Ilan Pappe: The present dismal reality unfolding in the Middle East has clear historical roots and a journey into the past may help to illuminate what lies behind the destructive policies of Israel in both Palestine and Lebanon. Zionism arrived in Palestine in the late 19th as a colonialist movement motivated by national impulses. The colonisation of Palestine fitted well the interests and policies of the British Empire on the eve of the First World War. With the backing of Britain, the colonisation project expanded, and became a solid presence on the land after the war and with the establishment of the British mandate in Palestine (which lasted between 1918 and 1948). While this consolidation took place, the indigenous society underwent, like other societies in the rest of the Arab world, a steady process of establishing a national identity. But with one difference. While the rest of the Arab world was shaping its political identity through the struggle against European colonialism, in Palestine nationalism meant asserting your collective identity against both an exploitative British colonialism and expansionist Zionism. Thus, the conflict with Zionism was an additional burden. The pro-Zionist policy of the British mandate there ...

Listen, also, to this song in Aromanian (Vlach) language: www.youtube.com In Greece, the Aromanians are called Vlachs (Greek: Βλάχοι). There are numerous festivals celebrating Aromanian culture all over Greece. The Panhellenic Federation of Cultural Associations of Vlachs (www.vlachs-popsv.gr) has publicly stated that they do not want Aromanian recognized as a minority language nor do they want it inserted into the education system, and the same organization also protested, when Thede Kahl discussed in a paper if they could be designated a "minority". In Greece, Aromanians are not regarded as an ethnic but as a linguistic - albeit unrecognized officially - minority, since most of them express an ethnic Greek identity. The majority of the Aromanian population lives in northern and central Greece. The main areas inhabited by these populations are the Pindus Mountains, around the mountains of Olympus and Vermion, and around the Prespa Lakes near the border with Albania. Some Aromanians can still be found in isolated rural settlements such as Samarina, Perivoli and Smixi. There are also Aromanians (Vlachs) in towns and cities such as Ioannina, Metsovo, Veria, Katerini, and Thessaloniki. It is ...

Preserving National Unity: Culturometric Rapid Appraisals of Ethnic Inequalities (Social Issues, Justice and Status: Social Justice, Equality and Empowerment)

Modern developing multi-cultural countries claim their status as progressive democracies by promulgating policies of civic cohesion engendering ethnic equity within a national unity. However, what is promulgated through government mission statements, public speeches and the sentiments of national anthems might not successfully align with realities of citizen concern. This book introduces a Culturometric application for evaluating these claims to progressive democracy within multi-cultural developing countries. ...Read more

Contentious Identities: Ethnic, Religious and National Conflicts in Today's World (Framing 21st Century Social Issues) Overviews

This book analyzes widespread global ethnic conflicts that tear asunder nations and regions, such as the former Yugoslavia. Dan Chirot casts his analysis in a discussion of the conflict between national and ethnic identity, discovering that ethnic identity, rooted in centuries of tradition and habit, often trumps national identity, which may be of more recent gestation and have a weaker hold on people. His analysis affords insights into the recent aggressive U.S. posture on ‘nation building,’ showing the blindness of this approach to deeply-entrenched ethnic identities. His timely book can be used in classes on globalization, international development, political sociology, social movements, and theory.

The goal of this new, unique Series is to offer readable, teachable "thinking frames" on today’s social problems and social issues by leading scholars, all in short 60 page or shorter formats, and available for view on http://routledge.customgateway.com/routledge-social-issues.html

For instructors teaching a wide range of courses in the social sciences, the Routledge Social Issues Collection now offers the best of both worlds: originally written short texts that provide "overviews" to important social issues as well as teachable excerpts from larger works previously published by Routledge and other presses.

Eugene Kinckle Jones: The National Urban League and Black Social Work, 1910-1940

A leading African American intellectual of the early twentieth century, Eugene Kinckle Jones (1885-1954) was instrumental in professionalizing black social work in America. In his role as executive secretary of the National Urban League, Jones worked closely with social reformers who advocated on behalf of African Americans and against racial discrimination in the United States. Coinciding with the Great Migration of African Americans to northern urban centres, Jones's activities on behalf of the Urban League included campaigning for equal hiring practices, advocating for the inclusion of black workers in labour unions, and promoting the importance of vocational training and social work for members of the black community. Drawing on rich interviews with Jones's colleagues and associates, as well as recently opened family and Urban League papers, Felix L. Armfield freshly examines the growth of African American communities and the new roles played by social workers. In calling attention to the need for black social workers in the midst of the Great Migration, Jones and his colleagues sought to address problems stemming from race and class conflicts from within the community. This book blends the biography of a significant black leader with an in-depth discussion of the roles of black institutions and organizations to study the evolution of African American life immediately before the civil rights era. ...Read more
