postheadericon This is another Thailand, most of you have never seen, the fabulous North

This is another Thailand, most of you have never seen, the fabulous North Tube. Duration : 14.92 Mins.

We assume that most of you have seen Thailand. Phuket and Ko Samui are highly regarded by many but personally I think the most beautiful part of Thailand in the north can be found. High mountains, tall forests and tropical rainforests, ethnic minorities and not the commercial where one group of holiday-makers must give way to the other but the real and they are still available. A gifted with a very low humidity climate. What a hide, for example south of Bangkok where there is often a blanket over you. Where in the south, rain is often spoilsport; in Chiang Mai we have rain but not a monsoon rain. Mae Hong Son, Mae Sariang, Pai, Doi Angkhan and several beautiful places in the north. What about the national parks such as Doi Inthanon the highest mountain of Thailand, the many waterfalls and the Doi Suthep National Park. Each more beautiful than the other. It is no coincidence that during the New Year all hotels are fully booked and that almost all here from Bangkok, Chiang Mai encounter. I dare say, at this time of year the weather is as everyone would wish. Near Chiang Rai, the most remarkable mountain in Thailand, Phu Chi Fa, see to believe. The Mekong river, too numerous to mention. May live here, I speak for many who retire here are coming to be fantastic! Come see for yourself.

postheadericon Volunteer in Thailand

Volunteer in Thailand Tube. Duration : 3.02 Mins.

Whether it is the excitement and energy of Bangkok or the beautiful beaches and islands dotted around the coast, Thailand has long held a draw for travellers to South East Asia. The only country in the region never to have been ruled by a European power, Thailand is renowned for its Buddhist traditions, friendly people and delicious national cuisine. Economic growth over the last two decades has been impressive. However, huge disparities remain, and the benefits of economic progress have not been shared by all in Thailand. This is particularly true for ethnic minorities, migrants and refugees. Volunteers can contribute their time and energy to a wide range of projects in the region of Chang Mai, while gaining a real understanding of the country, its culture and the challenges faced by local people. Placements are available in the following areas: teaching and education, health and HIV/AIDS prevention, women's empowerment, refugee education and assistance. To find out more how you can volunteer in Thailand or elsewhere worldwide please visit: www.partnershipvolunteers.org http

postheadericon Thailand at the limit: One year after the April-May 2010 protests

Thailand at the limit: One year after the April-May 2010 protests Video Clips. Duration : 118.40 Mins.

Just over a year ago, in the midst of the stand-off among Thai government forces, red-shirted members of the United Democratic Front Against Dictatorship (UDD), and other murky actors, Thai Studies scholars at ANU gathered for 'Thailand on the Verge' [See video here: www.youtube.com to talk about the unfolding crisis in the streets. One year later, Thailand is no longer on the verge. Instead, the country appears to be reaching a political, social, historic and economic limit. There is a growing war on the border with Cambodia, the PM Abhisit government and the UDD are locked into conflict with one another, possible elections are on the horizon, and competing versions of the truth of April-May 2010 are being offered by different factions. Long-term crises -- the rise in the use of terrorist tactics and the laws to address them, economic inequality, and the precarity of ethnic minorities and migrants -- remain unresolved. In this video scholars from the ANU College of Asia and the Pacific and the ANU College of Law discuss the political, economic, historic, and cultural limits of the present situation. Speakers: Dr Pongphisoot Busbarat, School of International, Political, and Strategic Studies Dr Nicholas Farrelly, School of Regulation, Justice, and Diplomacy Dr Jane Ferguson, School of Culture, History and Language Dr Mark Nolan, ANU College of Law Dr Craig Reynolds, School of Culture, History and Language Dr Andrew Walker, School of International, Political, and Strategic ...

postheadericon Long-Neck- Giraffe Women of Thailand

Long-Neck- Giraffe Women of Thailand Tube. Duration : 4.25 Mins.

A long rugged jeep ride to the border of Northern Thailand brings you to a world that will soon be gone. In 2001, The Karen, or Kayan group of ethnic minorities from Myamar (Burma) are caught in this simple refugee village, yet keep their dignity ... A kaleidoscope of color combines these basic surroundings with strikingly dressed women selling crafts to picture taking, gawking tourists. We had mixed feelings about going, afraid of it being a zoo...but what we found were gentle, lovely souls, educated and with a great nature, and amazing physical beauty. In recent years, it seems that organizations are trying to help them relocate, and live normal lives...freeing themselves of the money making Neck Coils that both deform and exploit them.

Linguistic Diversity and National Unity: Language Ecology in Thailand

Linguistic Diversity and National Unity: Language Ecology in Thailand Overviews
Unlike other multi-ethnic nations, such as Myanmar and India, where official language policy has sparked bloody clashes, Thailand has maintained relative stability despite its eighty languages. In this study of the relations among politics, geography, and language, William A. Smalley shows how Thailand has maintained national unity through an elaborate social and linguistic hierarchy.

Smalley contends that because the people of Thailand perceive their social hierarchy as the normal order, Standard Thai, spoken by members of the higher levels of society, prevails as the uncontested national language. By examining the hierarchy of Thailand's diverse languages and dialects in light of Thai history, education, culture, and religion, Smalley shows how Thailand has been able to keep its many ethnic groups at peace.

Linguistic Diversity and National Unity explores the intricate relationship between language and power and the ways in which social and linguistic rank can be used to perpetuate order.
