Oscar Barbarin is the Lila L. and Douglas J. Hertz Endowed Chair and Professor of Psychology at Tulane University. Dr. Barbarin earned the Ph.D. in clinical psychology at Rutgers University in 1975 and completed a post-doctoral fellowship in social psychology at Stanford University in 1983. He has held positions in Psychology, Social Work, and Afro-American & African Studies at the University of Michigan and University of North Carolina Chapel Hill and was president of the American Orthopsychiatry Association from 2001-2003. His research addresses the effects of early childhood intervention and the etiology of achievement and underachievement in ethnic minority children. He has also completed longitudinal studies of the effects of poverty, violence and family life from birth to age 5, and the socio-emotional development of South African Children. Dr. Barbarin has received several distinguished honors for his research and scholarship, including grants from the WT Grant Foundation, the WK Kellogg Foundation, and the National Institute of Health.
